Fourche Creek Restoration
The Fourche Creek begins near the Saline County community of Salem and flows eastward through Little Rock. Taken for granted and much abused for many years, the creek drains the entire city.
Some call Little Rock's "kidney," because it collects water from numerous creeks and cleanses runoff, finally emptying into the Arkansas River near the Little Rock airport.
Its waters support complex wetlands ecosystems, often unrecognized or mistaken for "swamp."
Some of the cypress and tupelo trees lining its banks are centuries old. Wildflowers explode on the creek in spring and summer alongside cane and privet.
Deer, beaver, owls, hawks, mink, turtles and a wide variety of other wildlife thrive in the trees and thick vegetation.
Fourche Creek also promises to become the state's foremost urban paddling stream.
Our program
Village Commons recognizes the importance of waterways like Fourche Creek to the health of our communities.
Our Fourche Creek restoration and preservation program, led by board member David Anderson, works with communities along the creek to explore ways to clean up trash, repair damaged banks and prevent streambank erosion.
In early March, Village Commons volunteers turned out as part of the Great American cleanup and collected a stunning variety of trash - plastic water bottles, styrofoam cups, beer cans, food wrappers, cigarette butts, lumber, liquor bottles, tires and balls. Every major sport is represented along the Fourche. Volunteers collected baseballs, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, frisbees, golfballs, nerfballs, even a racquetball. After all, everything round rolls downhill and Fourche Creek is at the bottom of all the hills.
Clearly, this effort will take years.
The Fourche Creek program dovetails with much of Village Commons's work. The Crump Park garden where the Community Garden program works is just a hundred yards from the creek, emphasizing the connectedness of human and natural habitats.
Periodic cleanups occur several times a year.
